With the spring and summer harvests completed, autumn has arrived in Japan. Meanwhile, our matcha has safely reached the factory and the 2025 season was launched last month. Now that the busy season has eased for both us and our suppliers, the Somage team finally had the chance to visit their fields. Our first stop was Shizuoka, one of the key regions where our matcha is grown. This journey allowed us to see tea cultivation up close, connect with the people behind our matcha, and gain a deeper understanding of the care and dedication that goes into every leaf.

Shizuoka Prefecture is located on the southern coast of Honshu, Japan’s main island, just below Mount Fuji. It is one of Japan’s most renowned tea-growing regions, with nutrient-rich volcanic soil and clean rivers that support healthy tea cultivation. The warm coastal climate provides stable growing conditions, while the surrounding mountains create significant temperature differences between day and night. This slows the growth of the tea bushes, allowing them to photosynthesize during the day and rest in the cool night air. The result is a naturally sweet and full-bodied matcha, unique to the Shizuoka region.

Shizuoka is also known for its unique cultivation method called Chagusaba, or the Traditional Tea-Grass Integrated System. This method preserves biodiversity while enhancing tea quality and received UNESCO’s Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) certification in May 2013. The certified areas include four cities—Kakegawa, where many of our suppliers are located, Kikugawa, Shimada, and Makinohara—as well as one town, Kawanehoncho, in a mountainous and hilly area of Shizuoka’s Southern Alps. Efforts are made in these regions to ensure the continuation of the Chagusaba method for future generations.

At its core, the Chagusaba system represents a harmonious coexistence between people and nature. It refers to semi-natural grasslands where bamboo grass, Japanese pampas grass, and other local grasses are maintained. The mowed grasses are then laid between the ridges of tea fields as organic mulch, helping to protect the soil, reduce fertilizer use, and support the ecosystem. These grasslands are located close to the tea fields so that the grasses can be easily utilized, and the system also provides habitat for many rare plant and animal species. This cooperative, sustainable approach to tea cultivation is a hallmark of Shizuoka and is rarely seen elsewhere in Japan.

Visiting Shizuoka was an incredible experience and we feel proud to share matcha cultivated with such care, now available as Matcha 02 and Matcha 06 on our website.
